He is also an experienced, supportive, magic teacher, guiding adults and young people who wish to get started, or to develop, in the world of magic.
His magical skills have been recognised by the Magic Circle with its highest award – Member of the Inner Magic Circle, with Gold Star (limited to 300 magicians worldwide).
He became fascinated by magic at an early age. In his teens he won a nationwide competition for magicians, which led to him being invited to join The Magic Circle when he was eighteen. He has been performing magic ever since.
Stories are often woven into his magic presentations, and he also performs as a storyteller, using the power of stories to entrance audiences young and old.
David is always looking for new ways of using the power of magic and stories.
He helped create a pioneering project in which children and young people with hand and upper limb disabilities are taught to perform magic, as part of a therapeutic programme to improve hand function, performance and problem-solving skills, and self-confidence.
That project changes the lives of participants in a deeply magical way, and is delivered by Breathe Arts Health Research, a leading arts-in-health social enterprise, which David chairs. This work has led to Breathe receiving numerous awards in the worlds of healthcare, children’s arts, and magic.
David has taught magic to occupational therapists, clinicians, hospital play assistants, and many others.
He has also collaborated with Professor Roger Kneebone (Professor of Surgical Education, Imperial College) on how the communication skills of magicians can be applied in other contexts, including training of surgeons. He was one of a number of experts whose work was discussed in Professor Kneebone’s book Expert: Understanding the Path to Mastery.
In a parallel universe, David was a busy barrister and QC/KC for many years. He combines that background with his performance and storytelling expertise to teach communication and presentation skills in the corporate world.
